When you think of BOTOX in Houston, the first thing that comes to mind might be celebrities who use it to fight the signs of aging. Without a doubt, BOTOX can help you look your best. But did you know that it can do so much more than that? When it is administered in certain ways, it can have some big health benefits. This blog post explores some common medical applications of BOTOX.

Relieving Migraines

Migraines can be debilitatingly painful. Fortunately, BOTOX is emerging as an effective way to address them. One study found that almost half of the people who underwent BOTOX injections experienced fewer migraine days each month. After five rounds of treatment, about 70% of patients noticed fewer migraines. Some researchers believe that BOTOX works for migraines because it blocks neurotransmitters that carry pain signals from the brain.

Calming an Overactive Bladder

People with an overactive bladder may suffer from incontinence and the need to visit the bathroom much more frequently than other people. When BOTOX is injected into the bladder, it can calm those overactive muscles, leading to more regular contractions and more normal urination patterns.

Reducing Excessive Sweating

Excessive underarm sweating occurs when nerves trigger the release of sweat, even when a person isn’t exercising or experiencing emotional triggers for sweat. BOTOX can address this problem by calming the muscles that would otherwise be pumping sweat into the underarms.

Addressing Eyelid Muscle Spasms

Well before BOTOX was used for cosmetic purposes, it was used to reduce eye spasms. It can effectively reduce things like uncontrolled blinking, watering of the eyes, and pain and irritation in the eyelids. It does so by calming overactive muscles. (Fun fact: When a doctor was using BOTOX to address a patient’s eye spasms, the patient asked for an injection in her forehead because she wanted her wrinkles to go away. That incident marked the beginning of BOTOX’s cosmetic applications.)

Relieving TMD

The TMJ is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the rest of the skull. When it becomes overworked, it can cause a range of painful symptoms. TMJ disorder (TMD) is often treated with BOTOX. The BOTOX relaxes the muscles around the joint, reducing pain and giving the TMJ an opportunity to heal.

What Can BOTOX Do for You?

This article has discussed just a few of the many applications for BOTOX. If you believe that it might help you lead a healthier life, visit a doctor who has experience in offering it for the specific condition that you have.
